English Setter

SIZE
The shoulder-height is 67 - 68cm (27 1/2 - 26 1/2in) for dogs and 61 - 67cm (24 - 27 1/2in) for bitches.

COAT
The coat is long, silk-like, and wavy. English Setters colours are blue belton (white with blue-black), orange belton (white with orange), lemon belton (white with lemon-yellow), and liver belton (white with liver). There are also three-coloured English Setters.

CARE REQUIRED
From time to time the English Setter needs to have the excessive and old hair clipped or trimmed. If you intend to show this breed, then considerably more attention is required. For household pets the coat can be kept in good condition between trims by clipping excess hair between the pads of the feet and also under the ears. This last point is important to let air reach the ears to prevent infections.

CHARACTER
The English Setter is a friendly, gentle-natured, sensitive dog that bonds with its family. It is lively, intelligent, sociable, and cautious.

TRAINING
This breed is not difficult to train but they do tend to have a mind of their own and this needs to be taken into account. They respond best to a consistent and loving approach. In some cases it is advisable to attend puppy courses with them.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
These dogs are naturally happy with other dogs and household animals. Companionship with children will never lead to problems. These dogs are friendly to all people and will greet everyone as a friend.

EXERCISE
The English Setter needs quite a lot of exercise. Take it for regular long walks or let it run alongside a cycle once it is fully grown. They have a tendency to wander and you should make sure you have a good fence.
