Ibizan Hound
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN The Balearic Islands.
MOST SUITED AS Hunting dog (by sight, sound, and scent), and family pet.
SIZE
The shoulder-height is 66 - 72cm (26 - 28 1/2in) for dogs and 60 - 67cm (23 1/2 - 261i2in) for bitches.
SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
These dogs get on well with children but hold back watchfully with strangers. Once they decide the stranger means no harm, they thaw very quickly.
COAT
The Ibizan Hound has short-haired, longhaired, and rough-haired varieties. The most usual is the short-haired; the long-haired is very rare. The rough-haired has a longer coat of rough hair that is softer textured than the other two varieties. Predominant colours are various shades of red, white, or a combination of them.
CARE REQUIRED
The short-haired version can be groomed occasionally with a rubber brush. The rough-haired ones do not need hand-plucking and can also be groomcd by an occasional brushing.
CHARACTER
The Ibizan Hound (or Podenco Ibicenco in Spanish or Ca Eivissenc in Catalan), is a calm and affectionate dog which is very loyal to its family, and reasonably independent, vigilant, alert, intelligent, and keen to learn. It is also fairly obedient, has tremendous stamina, is energetic, brave, and equable. The Ibezan Hound has a strongly developed hunting instinct. The dogs of this breed can be rather dominant towards other males. Provided their social training introduced them to your cat when they were young, there will be no problems.
EXERCISE
Despite the enormous ability to adapt of this breed - it can even be kept in a flat - it still needs a great deal of exercise. They can run alongside a cycle but not before the dog is fully grown!
They may want to investigate something which attracts their interest, because they remain very much hunting dogs. To prevent this, you will need a good fence of at least 2m (6ft 7in) high: they can even apparently climb over fences. The majority enjoy retrieving for you, and coursing is an ideal sport for them.
GENERAL
Given their character, these dogs do not belong in a kennel. They are considered half Greyhound because they hunt by sight, scent, and sound.
