Keeshond
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN Germany.
MOST SUITED AS Vermin destroyer, watchdog, and family pet.
SIZE
The ideal shoulder-height for Keeshonds is 46cm (18in) with deviations of 4cm (11in) accepted. A slightly larger related variety is known in The Netherlands, where most Keeshonds come from, as the Wolfkeeshond. The ideal shoulder height for this 'Wolf Spitz' is 50cm (19in) with deviations of 5cm (2in) accepted.
COAT
These dogs have a thick undercoat with longer covering hair.They are wolf-grey, plain black, brown, or white.
CARE REQUIRED
During moulting the coat needs to be brushed and combed regularly to remove the dead hair. At other times there should be a minimum of combing to avoid damaging the undercoat.
CHARACTER
These dogs are boisterous, loyal to their handler, vigilant, not easily led astray by bribes, intelligent, and eager to learn.
TRAINING
These dogs quickly know what is expected of them. Training them is therefore fairly easy. Keeshonds are often successful in dog sports such as agility skills trials.
SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Keehonds are naturally good with other dogs and children but they need to be introduced when young to cats. Strangers approaching will always be noted by barking.
EXERCISE
The Keeshond has an average need for exercise and will usually adapt to family circumstances.
