MOST SUITED AS Fisherman's working dog and family pet.

SIZE
The shoulder-height is 50 - 57cm (19 1/2 - 22 1/2in) for dogs, but a height of 54cm (21 1/2in) is preferred, and 43 - 52cm (17 - 201/2in) for bitches, with a preferred height for them of 46cm (18in).

COAT
The coat is dense and wavy, or curly. The most usual colours and combinations are black, brown, white, black and white, and brown and white.

CARE REQUIRED
The wavy-coated variety is usually closely clipped at the hindquarters and on the nose but the curly-coated dogs mostly have a work­ing retriever Spaniels rmine whether a breed is a spaniel, a retriever, both or neither.

Their distinguishing characteristics are a broad muzzle, long and full ear clip (especially in the United States), with which only the tail is close-clipped. Groom them regularly with brush and comb.

CHARACTER
Portuguese Water Dogs are high-spirited, friendly, obedient, and sociable dogs, which are keen to work, intelli­gent, and quick to grasp things. They also have a good nose for scents.

These are friendly, gentle-natured, dogs that are kind to children, unconditionally loyal to their owner and family, pliable though not slavishly so, calm, and not yappy.

The Irish Wolfhound is relatively easy to train. A gentle approach with plenty of un is not difficult. They like to work hard, are intelligent, and understand quickly. These dogs are sensitive to the intonations in your voice.
