Eurasian (Eurasier)
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN Germany.
MOST SUITED AS Family pet.
SIZE
The shoulder-height is 52 - 60cm (20 1/2 - 23in) for dogs and 48 - 56cm (18 1/2 - 22in) for bitches. The ideal height is 56cm (22in) for dogs and 52cm (20in) for bitches. The optimum weight for dogs is 26kg (57lb) and 22kg (48 1/2lb) for bitches.
COAT
The outer coat is of medium-length stiff hair which has a ruffled appearance. The undercoat is thick and woolly. Every combination of colours is permitted except white, white patches, or liver.
CARE REQUIRED
The Eurasian does not need much grooming. It is indeed recommended to avoid regular grooming which might loosen too much of the woolly under-layer. During moulting a comb with a double row of metal teeth should be used to remove dead and loose hairs.
CHARACTER
This is a calm, equable dog which is alert, friendly, can have a mind of its own but is reasonably obedient, that is intelligent, and very loyal to its family. The Eurasian does not bark much.
TRAINING
This breed is not difficult to train although the handler needs to be consistent to have adequate authority. Eurasians are not a suitable breed to live in a kennel.
SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
This breed gets on very well with children but is rather reserved towards strangers. Contact with other dogs does not normally cause any problems. Get them used to other animals when they are still young.
EXERCISE
This breed needs fairly substantial amounts of exercise. An hour per day walking with the dog is a minimum. Additionally, the dog loves to run around and play off the lead.
